What hours are you open?

The daycare hours are based on the needs of my clients. Most of my clients leave their children with me for approximately 8-9 hours per day. Please let me know what your working hours, and working location are, and we'll come up with your "contracted" hours. These hours must fall between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 pm.

Do you do Before and After School care?
No, I do not provide schoolage care.  The school system offers a wonderful "Before and After School Program".  Please contact them for details on how to enroll your child.

I see that you have dogs...
We do have several pets that are considered members of our family. All of our pets have been spayed/neutered and are current on immunizations, heartworm preventative, and flea/tick prevention. The breed we have (beagles) are very even-tempered and excellent with children.  However, children will NEVER be left alone with animals at ANY time so as to prevent any accidents. Children are also expected to treat our pets properly and this will be taught on a supervised basis.

Do you speak French in your home?

Being raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I never had the chance to learn French. I have an excellent command of the English language, and am currently studying French on my own at home.

Why do I have to pay when my child is not there (due to illness, vacation, etc.)?

All rates are based on enrollment, not on actual attendance as I am legally limited by The Ontario Day Nurseries Act.  Since I am limited to 5 children under 10 years of age in my care at any one time my income is capped as well. In order to run a legal business, and not close my doors suddenly I need to have a reliable income. My rates are structured accordingly and non-negotiable.

If you are thinking of using an illegal daycare (more than 5 children under 10 years old in care at a home residence at any one time) because it may appear cheaper, or offer "free days off" please be aware that the government can (and will) inspect the home, and close it immediately if it's deemed to be illegal. You will be without daycare from that moment. This will never be an issue with my daycare, as I abide by the Day Nurseries Act. I think your peace of mind is well worth the small monetary amount we may be talking about here.

Do I need to pay you for your vacation? What about when you get sick/need a day off?

No you do not pay for my annual vacation, however,  to acquire a caregiver with 20 years experience, and a reliable quality program requires your understanding that I need regular time off as well. In my contract I have 7 paid annual/personal/sick days. I also take the days off between (and including) Christmas Eve and New Years Day with pay and all statuatory holidays. All other days,  annual vacations are taken unpaid by me. I will endeavor to supply a minimum of one month's notice of all leave consisting of 3 or more days, if at all possible. I do take two annual vacations, one in the spring, and one in the late summer.  These are scheduled now (see Rates and Hours of Operation Page) and should present no problem working around as you have plenty of time to make other arrangements.  You are not required to pay for these vacations so you may pay another caregiver, or take your own vacation and save a little money.

You are required to have reliable backup care in place in the event that I schedule time off. Please remember that in using home-based childcare that I am only one person, and I require regular time off for my family life, I regularly work a 50 hour(plus) week and some things simply *must* be scheduled during the working day. If this is not an option for you may I suggest the local daycare center as they have more staff, and can be open every business day.  Remember that a center will still send your child home for the sames things that I do, so you'll still be required to have emergency backup care for those days.

Should I choose Home Based Daycare or Center Based Daycare?

Home daycare is typically less expensive than a daycare center, but if you have no backup help (family, friends, other provider's) you may wind up using alot of your own time off to cover your child's illnesses, or my occasional need for time off. A daycare center is usually open every business day, except during bad weather (and now most of them close between Christmas and New Year's too.) The trade-off (in my opinion) for guaranteed care available every business day, at a center, is less personalized care for your child by staff that may be very young and inexperienced, with a high staff turnover rate. You will be required to pay approximately 25-40 percent or more per year to maintain this conveniene and they too have a strict illness policy, so you will still be required to find backup for the times when your child is ill.

If however you want your child to have a very personalized, family style daycare experience in their early years, with a mature proven caregiver, having nearly 20 years experience in the childcare field then my daycare may be the place for you. With all the studies about bonding with a primary caregiver in the first years of life, I personally think a home environment is the way to go for preschool age children. They will have enough time for large group setting when they reach school age, which comes all too quickly!

Is my child required to nap?

No, you child is not required to nap.  We have a Quiet time between 12:30 3 p.m. every day, and each child is required to rest quietly on their mat.  They may look at books, or play with the quiet time buckets I have prepared.  If they fall asleep (which most of them do) they will be left to sleep.  No child will be forced to sleep but no child will be forced to stay awake either.

Will you hold a spot for me (for a few weeks, or the whole summer)?

Yes, I may, however, certain conditions must be met. If you wish to have me hold a spot for more than a two weeks when starting with me you will have two choices. You may pay the "advanced registration fee" (equal to 2 weeks tuition) and be guaranteed it will be there when you want it. This money is non-refundable.  The other choice is that you can take a chance, not pay me, and hope that it's still there when you need it. However, please be advised that you will need to start immediately, and you will still be required to pay for your first and last weeks of childcare in advance, as well. Please remember that I will be actively looking to fill that spot, as a loss of even one child has a big financial impact on my business. You may check back with me from time to time to see if it's still available, however, I'm under no obligation to notify you if the space is filled before your desired date.
